Thirteen Questions About Books, Authors, and Reading

Thirteen Questions AND Answers, of course!

What is your absolute favorite novel to date?  I'll have to go with my sentimental favorite Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen. I've read it only twice, but I declare I think of the story nearly everyday.

What was the novel that began your reading obsession? As a child I was crazy for The Black Stallion Series by Walter Farley. I read them over and over again. Once I got my own horses I was living my dream and left the horse themed novels behind. The book that seemed to kick start my reading obsession as an adult was Outlander by Diana Gabaldon. A customer of the retail store I managed recommended it to me, and then she kept making recommendations. Good ones! (HAH! So, really, it's all her fault!)

Who are your favorite long-term authors? Choosing to list them solely by number of books read, the top ten are: Nora Roberts/J.D. Robb (103), Jayne Ann Krentz/Amanda Quick (62), Sandra Brown (53), Barbara Delinsky (38),  Linda Lael Miller (36), Linda Howard (32), Jude Deveraux (28), Karen Robards (23), a tie for 9th between Janet Evanovich and LaVyrle Spencer (21 each), and Sue Grafton (20).  I still read new releases by the five whose names are bolded.

Who are your favorite newly discovered authors? I'll go with the authors I started reading within the last few years whose books I've read number above ten. Marie Force (24), Charlaine Harris (19), Robyn Carr and Kristen Ashley (18 each), and Pamela Clare, Susan Mallery & Rhys Bowen (12 each).

Which books being released in 2013 are you most looking forward to? In alphabetical order by author: Own the Wind (Chaos #1) by Kristen Ashley, The Family Way (Molly Murphy #12) by Rhys Bowen, Entwined With You (Crossfire #3) by Sylvia Day, Out of Breath (Breathing #3) by Rebecca Donovan, Written in My Own Heart's Blood (Outlander #8) by Diana Gabaldon, This Girl (Slammed #3) by Colleen Hoover, Being Me and Revealing Us (Inside Out Trilogy Books #2 and 3) by Lisa Renee Jones, Claim Me and Complete Me (Stark Trilogy Books #2 and 3) by J. Kenner, This Man Confessed (This Man #3) by Jodi Ellen Malpas, Walking Disaster (Beautiful #2) by Jamie McGuire, Eyes Wide Open (The Blackstone Affair #3) by Raine Miller, Untitled Gabriel's Inferno Book #3 [Gabriel's Redemption] by Sylvain Reynard, and Whiskey Beach by Nora Roberts.

What authors have you met and had books autographed by? Really only one - Nora Roberts. I attended two book signings at her store in Boonsboro, Maryland. And, if all goes according to plan, my husband, daughter, and I will be attending Book Bash in Orlando, Florida, in June, where there will be more than 50 indie authors, most of which I have already read!!! w00t! w00t! w00t!

What author would you most like to meet?  I would say Kristen Ashley, because I get the feeling she is a hoot and much laughing would ensue! (She's confirmed for Book Bash, so hopefully I will get to meet her briefly, but wouldn't I just love to have a looooooooooong visit?!)

Who is your favorite book boy friend? Gee, let me think...oh, that's right, I made a list! Check it out on Goodreads: Best Book Boyfriends. This list will be updated frequently, I suspect!

What long running book series' have you read? The Alexandra Cooper Mysteries (12, so far) by Linda Fairstein , the Benni Harper Mysteries (15, so far) by Earlene Fowler, the Fool's Gold Series (12, so far) by Susan Mallery, the Kay Scarpetta Series (read 16 out of 20, so far) by Patricia Cornwell, the Kinsey Millhone Series (20 out of 22 alphabet novels, so far) by Sue Grafton, the Molly Murphy Mysteries (12 titles, so far) by Rhys Bowen, the Rizzoli & Isles Series (11, so far) by Tess Gerritsen, the Southern Vampire (Sookie Stackhouse) Series (11 out of 12, so far) by Charlaine Harris, the Stephanie Plum Series (20 out of 23, so far) by Janet Evanovich, the Temperance Brennan Series (15, so far) by Kathy Reichs, and the Virgin River Series (17 out of 20, so far) by Robyn Carr.

Which books have you read at least 3 times? Quite a few! The winners in a three-way tie at EIGHT readings are Fifty Shades of Grey, Fifty Shades Darker, and Fifty Shades Freed by E.L. James. Yeah, I know...EIGHT BLOODY TIMES!!!  There must be something about Christian and Ana's story that I can't stay away from...for more than two months, anyway. In second place is Twilight by Stephenie Meyer with four readings. And a huge-ass tie with three readings each: Mr. Perfect and Dream Man, both by Linda Howard; the Chesapeake Bay Saga by Nora Roberts; Carnal Innocence by Nora Roberts; Breathe and Motorcycle Man, both by Kristen Ashley; New Moon, Eclipse, & Breaking Dawn, all by Stephenie Meyer; and Family Blessings by LaVyrle Spencer.

Do you prefer hardcover, paperback, or digital books?  I prefer hardcover for history and reference books, and in novels, digital only. I read on my iPod touch mainly using the Kindle App; I have nearly 500 Kindle books, but also have 70 Nook Books. I use the Overdrive App to check out digital books through our public library. In addition to the four reading apps, I also have my book database and Goodreads apps.

What genre do you prefer to read and why?  Fairly consistently since the 90's my preferred genre has been romance. Mostly contemporary and romantic suspense, although I used to read a lot of historical romance, and some paranormal romance too. The times they are a changing though and with that the erotic category in romance has become VERY popular. Yes indeed-y! I am drawn to what the romance genre offers: the elevated emotions, flirting, sparring, teasing, sharing, planning, intimacy, romance, sex, and the happily-ever-after endings! When I reach the end of a book I want all tears to be happy ones!

Where is your favorite place to read? My favorite-favorite place is probably on our soft microfiber sofa. I don't need reading glasses or an outside light source while reading on my iPod, and the charge lasts for hours - even if I'm listening to my music while reading. How suh-weet it is!

Book Review: Disastrous by E.L. Montes

Title: Disastrous
Series: Disastrous #1
Author: E.L. Montes
Rating: 3 out of 5 stars
Published: 10/23/2012
Publisher: Self-published
Genre(s): Contemporary Erotic Romance

DESCRIPTION

After struggling with the loss of yet another person so dear to her heart, Mia Sullivan channeled her frustration and loneliness into focusing on her future career. At the top of her class at Harvard Law, she was nervous and excited when given the opportunity to work as a summer extern at one of the top firms in Boston. Her new boss was the young, extraordinarily handsome, and successful Marcus DeLuca. As she falls for his charms, she discovers he is keeping something from her.

Marcus DeLuca was living two separate lives: one that involved his successful career and the other that could potentially ruin his entire reputation. His secret could jeopardize not only his life but everyone he loves. There was no room in his life for a serious romantic relationship, but after meeting Mia, he makes room. He cannot resist her. She is innocent, humble, and pure--the total opposite of him. She distracts him from all of his deep dark secrets. He knows once Mia finds out the things he has done and who he truly is, she will never want to look at him again. Deep down he knows he must stay away, but he can't.

Mia and Marcus are heading down a path of love, lies, heartbreak, and betrayal. Can their love conquer all, or will the web of deceit be too much to overcome?

 MY THOUGHTS

*minor spoilers contained herein.*

I wouldn't even try to detail all the things I liked and didn't exactly care for about Disastrous. I'm glad I read it and know I'll read the sequel after it's released in May 2013. The thing about extremely passionate relationships, like Mia and Marcus's, is that even characters who are supposed to be highly intelligent often come across as total dolts—the heat quotient goes up and the IQ points take a dive. GAH! I can accept instant attraction and even strong feelings, but the total abandon of sense and almost instantaneous professions of love are stretching it. That I'll-love-you-forever thing when you don't really know anything about them leaves out the whole getting-to-know-them phase. Mia knows Marcus has things he's hiding from her. Other shadowy not-so-good things become apparent and they scare her but she still says she'll marry him!? Eegads! What good is that 4.0 GPA doing Mia? We're talking THE MOB here. Are you telling me she would agree to marry him when she knows he's involved in gun and drug running? That's some blinding love. There were a couple of passages I highlighted for their relevancy:

"He did well in Ethics? I snorted. Maybe in the classroom and the legal world he aced it, but when involving his relationship and personal life, his ethics sucked big time!" ~ Mia Sullivan

"Our relationship didn't make sense! We both had our issues, and two wrongs surely did not make a right." ~ Mia Sullivan

Anyway, besides some of Mia's narration and some of Marcus's behavior bothering me, the writing kept me reading. I was surprised to find, and make note of, quite a few typos given the list of people acknowledged for beta reading and editing. Do some of these digital books get scrambled in transfer? Hmmm.

Even though I don't mind some description of wardrobe, design, etc. I did seem to mind the overuse of the word "curves" in relationship to Mia's "curvy" figure—EIGHT times seemed excessive to me.

A pet peeve of mine relates to the continual use of mobile devices and no mention of them ever needing to be recharged. It bugs me! I appreciated that there were at least two mentions of Mia's mobile being charged. YAY! Another grievance of mine is the use of annoying texting abbreviations, especially with people supposedly not lacking a vocabulary. Seeing horrid slang mixed with proper punctuation and otherwise astute word usage also annoys me. I will say that not all of Mia and Marcus's texts were guilty of this offense—thank goodness!

About a quarter of the way in Mia tells Marcus that she doesn't buy lavish clothing, doesn't go on expensive trips and watches what she spends, but elsewhere she says, "Every girl should always enjoy a spa day at least twice a month."  Excuse me! That is not being careful with money! I guess is is a matter of perspective, but a spa day is sort of an expensive trip, isn't it?

I usually don't spend much (if any) time listing my gripes about a book. Is it because I mostly review books I've rated four or five stars? What is it about those highly rated books that lead me to keep my complaints to myself? Why did I not stop at rating Disastrous three stars and moving on to the next book without expounding on my grievances? I don't know. I certainly liked it and appreciated enough about it to finish. My admiration for these indie authors is high. I'm delighted they are brave enough to share their stories with us—flaws and all. Criticism is tough, especially to creative people, I think. For a debut novel Disastrous is a pretty strong introduction to a brave new author. I'm "cautiously" hopeful that in the next novel I will reach for at least one more star and really like it! (Update: I read Cautious and really liked it!)

Book Review: Release Me by J. Kenner

Title: Release Me
Series: Stark Trilogy #1
Author: J. Kenner
Rating: 5 out of 5 stars
Published: 01/01/2013
Publisher: Bantam
Genre(s): Contemporary Erotic Romance

DESCRIPTION

For fans of Fifty Shades of Grey and Bared to You comes an erotic, emotionally charged romance between a powerful man who’s never heard “no” and a fiery woman who says “yes” on her own terms.

He was the one man I couldn’t avoid. And the one man I couldn’t resist.

Damien Stark could have his way with any woman. He was sexy, confident, and commanding: Anything he wanted, he got. And what he wanted was me.

Our attraction was unmistakable, almost beyond control, but as much as I ached to be his, I feared the pressures of his demands. Submitting to Damien meant I had to bare the darkest truth about my past—and risk breaking us apart.

But Damien was haunted, too. And as our passion came to obsess us both, his secrets threatened to destroy him—and us—forever.

Release Me is an erotic romance intended for mature audiences.

 MY THOUGHTS

Wow, did I ever devour this book! What a tantalizing story! It was my first time reading this author, so I had no idea what to expect. I loved the structure, flow, pacing, word usage, and almost all of the dialogue. I liked how seemingly mundane things were elaborated on: explanations about the nightlight, DVR, camera, etc. There were so many passages I thought were skillfully penned. (Evidenced in the number of highlighted areas!) I liked how Nikki's secret was revealed—timing was everything! I loved the exchanges between Nikki and Damien—all of their exchanges! The way their sexual chemistry was depicted was so...libidinous, read, 'HAWT'! The character of Damien has secrets and skeletons in his closet—it's alluded to several times, but even though he may be ruthless in many areas he openly demonstrates to Nikki his affinity for her. Yeah, he's another outrageously sexy, 'effed' up billionaire, but he shows concern and tenderness along with his predominant ways. And, OMG, he's really good at surprises! It appears the next book in the trilogy, Claim Me, isn't due to be published until July [UPDATE: release date was moved up to April 23!]. Then the final book, Complete Me, won't be released until December [UPDATE: release date was moved up to July 30!]. I almost wish I hadn't discovered Rescue Me until I could read all three back-to-back. Then read them again, more than likely. I'll just have to make do with re-reading Release Me like everyone else. ;)

Book Review: Beneath This Man by Jodi Ellen Malpas

Title: Beneath This Man
Series: This Man Trilogy #2
Author: Jodi Ellen Malpas
Rating: 5 out of 5 stars
Self-Published: 01/15/2013
Re-Published: 06/18/2013 by Hachette
Genre(s): Contemporary Erotic Romance

DESCRIPTION

Jesse Ward drowned her with his intensity and blindsided her with his passion, but he kept her away from his dark secrets and broken soul. Leaving him was the only way Ava O'Shea could survive. She should have known that Jesse Ward is impossible to escape--and now he's back in her life, determined to remind her of the sensual pleasures they had shared. Ava is equally determined to get at the truth beneath this man's steely exterior. That means letting herself get close to the Lord of the Manor once more. And it's exactly where Jesse wants her--within touching distance...

MY THOUGHTS

Beneath This Man is indescribably and tortuously delicious! Ava and Jesse's obviously detrimental need to be together may be what fuels the flames in this erotic novel, but, in Ava, the author created a heroine able to retain some sense of self and logical thought despite the hero's hot-blooded and controlling ways. So, even though Ava and Jesse appear to be impassioned beyond all reason neither character came across as beyond all hope. I consider This Man to be the most erotic book I read last year, and Beneath This Man to be not only steamy but intensely emotional, as well. I can't even imagine what Jodi Ellen Malpas has in store for us with This Man Confessed, but I bet we'll all be sad to conclude the trilogy even with a happily-ever-after ending.

HIGHLIGHTS

"I've learnt that he is intense, hot-blooded and controlling, but he is also gentle, affectionate and protective."
 ~ Ava O'Shea

~*~

"Where you're concerned, I'll try my best, Ava. I already told you, I've waited too long for you. You're my little piece of heaven. Nothing will rob you from me. Nothing.  As long as I have you, I have purpose and reason. That is why I won't be drinking and that is why I will do everything in my power to keep you safe. Understand?"
~ Jesse Ward

~*~
"My work here is done." ← Said to Ava SIX times!!! He's a VERY busy man! ;)
~ Jesse Ward

Book Review: Defending Jacob by William Landay

Title: Defending Jacob
Series: Standalone
Author: William Landay
Rating: 4 of 5 stars
Published: 01/31/2012
Publisher: Delacorte Press
Genre(s): Contemporary Mystery, Legal Thriller, Crime Fiction

DESCRIPTION

Andy Barber has been an assistant district attorney in his suburban Massachusetts county for more than twenty years. He is respected in his community, tenacious in the courtroom, and happy at home with his wife, Laurie, and son, Jacob. But when a shocking crime shatters their New England town, Andy is blindsided by what happens next: His fourteen-year-old son is charged with the murder of a fellow student.

Every parental instinct Andy has rallies to protect his boy. Jacob insists that he is innocent, and Andy believes him. Andy must. He’s his father. But as damning facts and shocking revelations surface, as a marriage threatens to crumble and the trial intensifies, as the crisis reveals how little a father knows about his son, Andy will face a trial of his own—between loyalty and justice, between truth and allegation, between a past he’s tried to bury and a future he cannot conceive.

Award-winning author William Landay has written the consummate novel of an embattled family in crisis—a suspenseful, character-driven mystery that is also a spellbinding tale of guilt, betrayal, and the terrifying speed at which our lives can spin out of control.

MY THOUGHTS (Short and Sweet)

Defending Jacob is a well-written, compelling, and unpredictable thriller with a highly distressing conclusion. Pretty tough to take for a reader who lives for happily-ever-after endings, but I have no regrets. This book was bloody brilliant!

A small thing, but greatly appreciated, was the name pronunciation help the author provided. I certainly wish more writers thought to aid their readers this way.

HIGHLIGHTS

“You're staring.'
'You're my wife. I'm allowed to stare.'
'Is that the rule?'
'Yes. Stare, leer, ogle, anything I want. Trust me. I'm a lawyer.”
― William Landay, Defending Jacob

~*~

“Every father knows the disconcerting when you see your child as a weird, distorted double of yourself. It is as if for a moment your identities overlap. You see an idea, a conception of your boyish inner self...made real and flesh. He is you restarted, rewound; at the same time he is as foreign and unknowable as any other person.”
― William Landay, Defending Jacob

~*~

“The rest-the vast majority, tens of thousands of days-are unremarkable, repetitive, even monotonous. We glide through them then instantly forget them. We tend not to think about this arithmetic when we look back on our lives. We remember the handful of Big Days and throw away the rest. We organize our long, shapeless lives into tidy little stories...But our lives are mostly made up of junk, of ordinary, forgettable days, and 'The End' is never the end.”
― William Landay, Defending Jacob
