9 A wedding never to be forgotten
By Joseph DeMattos Sr.

Was my wedding the last one of World War II or the first one after WWII? That is one question that may never be answered.

The date was September 1, 1945, the time was 4 p.m. and the location was St. Augustine's Church in Waikiki. In a simple Catholic ceremony the former Marie Dolores Avilla became Mrs. DeMattos.

The importance of my wedding paled in comparison to an international event that was taking place at the same time thousands of miles away.

Before leaving the house for the church, the guys in my wedding party joined my father and me in a toast. A toast, not to my impending wedding, but to the end of World War II. Our ears were glued to the radio as we drove to Waikiki. We listened intently as the announcer described the arrival of General Douglas MacArthur and Fleet Admiral Chester Nimitz aboard the battleship USS MO for the signing of the formal surrender by Japan.

After the church ceremony, the wedding party had to travel through Waikiki to downtown Honolulu for formal wedding photos at a professional photo studio. It was sheer bedlam in Waikiki as the entire island celebrated the formal ending of the war that started at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941.

Driving through Waikiki and Honolulu was scary. People in and out of uniform filled the streets from one side to the other. It was a continuous wave of people. More than one guy poked his head in the car to kiss the bride. Then, too, there was the noise. Sirens, church bells, whistles and noisemakers. Confetti and streamers were all over the place.

When we eventually got to the photo studio the photographer was drunk and tried to get us to toast the end of the war with him. He was more interested in the end of the war than our wedding photos. Many of our photos were out of focus.

The good part about being married on V-J Day was that I never had to worry about remembering my wedding anniversary.

It has been my pet project to complain to local and national publications every year about the date associated with the signing of the declaration of surrender. It was September 2, 1945 in Tokyo Bay, but September 1 in the Territory of Hawaii and the United States. Two years ago I talked to a reporter from The Honolulu Advertiser concerning the actual date and he told me that he was following what historians wrote and that he could care less.

The headline for the Final Edition of The Honolulu Advertiser on September 1, 1945 read, "SIGN SURRENDER TODAY."

Here is what the Governor of Hawaii had to say in his Proclamation

Whereas, the signing of the terms of surrender of the empire of Japan on September 1, 1945, Hawaiian time, will constitute the final step in the achievement of victory all over the enemies of our country and is the occasion for great rejoicing, and

Whereas, such capitulation is of special significance to the inhabitants of the Territory of Hawaii who received the first blow of the treacherous attack of the Japanese, and whose labors and sacrifices have contributed in no small measure to the achievement of victory;

Now, therefore, I, Ingram M. Stainback, governor of Hawaii, in order that this victory may be suitably observed, do hereby proclaim, pursuant to the authority vested in me by Section 21 of the Revised Laws of Hawaii, 1945, that Saturday, the first day of September, 1945 shall be and is hereby designated as a territorial holiday.

Whenever you see an article pertaining to the signing of the surrender documents aboard the USS MO remember that it occurred on September 1, 1945 Hawaiian time or September 2, 1945 Japan time.

36 Per telephone conversation with a niece of Delbert Hill on 25 Apr 2004:

Delbert married the daughter of the minister who presided over Hazel (Hill) Beck's funeral. Her name may have been Hattie. They had a daugther that this niece believes was named Eloise. The niece also believes that Delbert was a factory worker and stayed in Medina, rather than moving to Columbus.

I had some free time and just discovered this [the marriage record for her parents]. Mom and Dad were not married in the Imaculate Conception Church as Daddy would not convert but agreed to let Mom raise us Catholic, so they were married in the rectory. I have their marriage license and when I get back from vacation I will forward it to you. But for now this info is all I can do.

I have not been able to find any original sources documenting the marriage of Moses Tullis and Mary Elizabeth Van Dyke. However, this "fact" goes back to at least the 1930's among Tullis researchers-- not that that makes it any more true, just a widespread assumption among many researchers. What is clear, from Moses' will, is that his wife at the time he died, and who survived him by some number of years, was named Mary Elizabeth. Some researchers believe that Moses Tullis was actually married twice: first to a Miss Van Dyke and second to a Mary Elizabeth Unknown. This is possibly more consistent with the total number of children involved. It is also perhaps more consistent with the fact that his widow, Mary Elizabeth, later remarried to a Mr. Timmons. If anyone has any original sources documenting the marriage or marriages of Moses Tullis I would appreciate hearing from you.

Marr: Their family is listed in the 1850 Fed Census of same County
My best guess is that Pleasant married Mary, after Elizabeth Clapper Smith left Council Bluff s. Vera Tillman, in her book, "How Deep My Roots," Page 17, stated that her ancestors, left C ouncil Bluffs, in Aug, 1846 and settled the town, Plum Hollow, now known as Thurman, Iowa. Th is group of woman, who's husbands inlisted in the Morman Battalion, left a month after thei r husbands. I suspect Elizabeth left with that group of women, as she was a resident there w ith her children. See "Forney's Five Family Records" book, page 34. Son, William F. Smith , states that he and his mother left Plum Hollow in Feb. 1852.
The timing lines up with the birth of Daughter, Martha, born 2 Sept 1847, just a year later.
